Spotlight: Audu Johnson - Founder of Shepherd Foundation
(Audu Johnson serves as the Executive Director of Shepherd Foundation in Lagos, Nigeria. His life, with all of its burdens, blessings, tragedies, and triumphs, has been the impetus behind the work of the ministry. Audu’s story is one of transformation, renewal and new beginnings – the very gifts Shepherd Foundation extends to the poor and to the victims of human trafficking in Nigeria. Audu Johnson was a teenager when he got his first bitter taste of Nigeria’s dog-eat-dog world.

Born into an impoverished, Nigerian family from Zaria (Northern Nigeria), with three other siblings, Audu’s chances of survival in Africa’s most populated country became slim to none when his father passed away. He was 14-years-old at the time and was staring at a bleak future dominated by the rules of Survival of the Fittest.

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW CAN HURT YOU
Audu’s family parted ways after his father’s death, setting out to look for something to do to make ends meet. His mother left the family when Audu was a child, his younger sister remained in their home village and Audu lived with his brother in Zaria and dropped out of school to find a menial job to survive.

His older sister, Janet left home to work in another city and didn’t return for one year. When she came back, she announced that she’d found a job that would pay for Audu to complete his secondary education. Audu accepted Janet’s offer and enrolled in the University of Jos, Nigeria to study medicine.

“It wasn’t until after I’d enrolled in the University that I discovered my sister didn’t really have a legitimate job,” Audu said.

Audu’s sister had been sponsoring his education with money she earned from being in prostitution. He struggled with the knowledge, but eventually Audu’s sister convinced him to accept the situation, chalking it up to the rules of life: if Audu could at least come away wi
